And then I will go on a hiatus for exams.

In this chapter, I have four battles at once.

Virago gets her lightsaber (or tries to), Tabo encounters Alix, Finn and Jannah have a rematch with Lightning and Shaina, and Engarde's plan is going to hurt someone before he stops.

Can you guess how this will end?
Rhymey was not the true Big Bad of the arc. However, he was a very strong, dangerous adversary that was able to win a few fights and one of the reasons the true Big Bad was dangerous.

Which villains were more powerful than him and could beat him in a fight?

For those who read my new update, I spoil nothing. I all but spelled it out. So yeah, I made a composite character of two sociopaths, the self-destructive and overly egoistical Talon Ted and the paranoid, murderous, two-faced Matt Engarde. Or basically the latter posing as the former.

As the battle between Virago and Stone Heart reaches a climax, Pan and Kallie do their best to help her.

Meanwhile, Starfleet gets a nasty wake-up call as Ainzul is under attack.

Can our heroes stop Stone Heart's madness?

Pan: Hello and welcome to another part of this spork! The usual guests are with me again.

Pan: Hello there and welcome with another episode of Starfleet Magic. Of course, the usual guests will be with us.

All: What did we do to deserve this?

No, I didn't get criticism yet, but am afraid it could be seen as just padding and spite.

While these are two reasons, I have five better ones.

Hello there! Today I am going to spork one of the worst Starfleet chapters. Finn, Poe and Jannah return, as well as Ace Ray!

All: Hi!

Pan: Let's begin!

At least the stereotypes aren't named Chinkos )
I have already expressed my opinion about Starfleet. They are the very definition of a White Savior, and I don't like them.

However, there is one loyalist I have a soft spot for, even when he spearheads the "fight" against strawmen. His name is Swift Star, and this guy appeared in Season 8. Read more... )
In "Hell Hath No Fury" neither of the final challenges was a true villain. They were simply Rey Skywalker and Lightning Dawn. They might be arrogant jerks, but have a good heart. Finn spares Lightning because he sees Rey in him, but how accurate is he?

In one week, I am going to update my series. Lightning Dawn, Admiral of the militaristic Starfleet, wants to prove the Empire he serves is superior to the Resistance due to facts, and even Rancors are no match for him. Can Finn, who has now become a true Jedi, stand up to him?

It's actually a tough fight.

Who has this?

Lightning: Strength.

Both of these heroes have come a long way. Finn was struggling to fight an elite Trooper with a baton, while Lightning was struggling to carry a crate. The two have vastly improved since then. Finn managed to defeat powerful foes like Benjamin and Alastor, though he had help in the last one. However, he always had to use his head in such fights. His offence at best consists of bombs. But Lightning's Uniforce is enough to blow up Rancors and even mountains in one hit. Lightning could kill Finn in one hit if one of his strongest spells connects.

Finn: Intelligence

Finn's most obvious advantage. On the one hand, we have him, who has used the Force to sense weak points, set up creative traps, reflect projectiles and maximized the effectiveness of his weapons by combining them with the Force. On the other hand, we have Lightning, who charges head first, gets a beating, then someone else reveals the weak point, then Lightning uses the Uniforce. Plus, Lightning has the absolutely helpful (to Finn) habit of announcing his attacks.

Lightning: Speed

True to his name, Lightning is extremely fast. He comes from an alleged "master race", basically is for equines, magical or not, what vampires are for humans. Smug evolutions who can partially back it up. Finn is faster than a normal human, but Lightning has trained himself to have superhuman speed and claims he can run around a country with ease.

Finn: Arsenal

Lightning loves flexing about Starfleet's technology. His visor is not just for decoration, as it can see through disguises and analyze some monsters, and he also has the Rainbow Rod, which is a very powerful weapon which has to be activated by voice. However, Finn has more. His blaster basically destroys fodder before they can reach him, the lightsaber is effective in melee combat, the detonators are powerful explosives Finn can use the Force to make them home on targets, and the Microwave Beam is about as powerful as the Rod, only it works by pulling the trigger and not voice.

Lightning: Durability

This one is a bit close. Both fighters can tank a lot of stuff, with Finn surviving a saber in the back, vampires, Ranmaru's flames and a beatdown from Alastor. However, Lightning has partial resistance to spells, something Finn does not have if we exclude mind control. The winged unicorn can shrug off moderate fireballs and magic beams. Finn will live through, but take damage.

Finn: More practical abilities

While Lightning's Uniforce is much stronger than Finn's best attack, Finn's abilities are more versatile. Finn can read minds, has strong telekinesis and can sense things he can't see, like being invisible, behind him or too fast, like the vampires. He has a destructive spin that will demolish anyone who charges head first and can make his bombs home on targets. Without seeking (and being tricked by) heat. Overall, Finn can do more than infuse his punches to hit harder and beams, unlike his adversary.

Lightning: Can block mental tricks

Both have strong mental resistance, but only Finn can read minds, so only his effectiveness can be affected. He basically cannot mind read Lightning and has to outsmart him the traditional way, because brute force will not work. This makes the battle harder for the human.

Finn: Friendship

Yes. Friendship. The two have comparable determination, and believe in themselves, Lightning moreso. So what has Finn more? Friends he cares about. He will go all-out, because he worries about the safety of those he loves, even the more powerful ones than himself. This helps him overcome his own fears and fight better.

Lightning: Flight

Finn's Force abilities are great, but not like Rey's, who can float. He is stuck on the ground, unlike Poe and Rey. Lightning doesn't need to do so, because he has his wings. With these, he can bombard Finn using his Rainbow Rod, or track him down with ease.

Finn: More open-minded

Lightning's mindset: Grand Ruler is always right and I must do what he says. If I can't overpower an enemy, I must power-up. Finn can adapt to his enemy, change his strategies, and question whatever bullshit others try to feed him. He can counter his inability to read Lightning's mind by studying his announced special attacks mid-fight, change strategies, even do psychological warfare.

Bonus: Tie: Determination

Both have a trait that makes them formidable. They do not give up. They can be knocked down, but will easily get back up more than once. They also have values they fight for. Lightning has belief in himself, Finn has friendship and freedom.
Shaina, the Captain of the Royal Guard working for the despotic Grand Ruler. She is very loyal to her king, and I buffed her with an emerald armor, spear and shield. She was more than a match for Jannah and would win if Jannah did not discover she has the Force.

She is powerful, but beatable. Who can take her on?

Their names are Ace Ray and Brass Bolt. From Starfleet Magic.

Ace Ray is an ex-commando who got shunned by everyone, including his sister, for badmouthing Starfleet. She declared him a criminal because his views were kinda extreme, he beat his sister, and so got arrested, but the true reason of the arrest was that he didn't like Starfleet. He got brainwashed into being loyal to the government.

Brass Bolt is like Ace Ray, but more extreme. He is demonized for wanting to free political prisoners like Ace Ray. He actually does free many prisoners, including some actual criminals, and can hack computers, but ends up getting arrested himself.

Poe Dameron and his squad free them after kicking the asses of the guards.

Abilities:

Ace Ray is an ex-veteran pegasus. He has no magical abilities, but he can fly, knows some martial arts, is very fast and has some physical strength. I will give him two gloves that shoot rays of fire like Ace from One Piece, but just rays.

Brass Bolt is also not a mage, he is, however, a skilled hacker and fighter. I give him for weapons two electric brass knuckles to fit the name and beat Nazis harder.

Not the best of the best, but they can help get shit done...
Power: 8.5/10 (he actually has a handicap against his allies, being unable to use actual magic, but he is still able to use super spechul abilities)

Influence: 9/10 (Perceived wrongly as a paragon of virtue and gets a lot of attention, not always earned, but he also gets outshined by worse Stus... somethimes.)

Vileness: 7/10 (He is horrid at being a hero, but his heart is in the right place. Anti-hero at best, though he is supposed to be a paragon of virtue.)

Lightning Dawn, the main hero of Starfleet. He is... deep breath... a Space Anthropomorphic Unicorn Nazi Admiral! Yeah, you see one of these words and wonder how he can be a hero.

This guy is a complete jerk. He basically finishes off monsters weakened by his allies and takes all the credit. He also can push away those who could be his friends and say he can do everything by himself, while he excuses everything the abusive Grand Ruler does... pure good of heart alright. He is arrogant and charges head first into fights, mostly using brute force. If he can't beat someone, the pussy doesn't even try to stand up to them. Before he gains confidence (and bravo for actually developing a little) he COWERED IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIGHT BECAUSE HE HAD NO POWERS. Chicken!

He mostly helps other races not because it's right, but because his race is superior and it's the White Man's burden to help them find enlightenment. Ugh, I want to puke. Also, this arrogance and scorn of friends? If he meets a cocky woman who pushes away her friends and gets power handed to her like himself, he will hate her and see her as a cocky bitch, because she is a wahman and has to learn her place. Then again, if a woman tries to be feminine, he will still hate her. Or just a heroine, threatening to outshine him. He often belittles female heroes, but not always.

When a human version of his girlfriend was denied a role in a school play, Lightning went to the principal, mocked the death of her pet, beat her up and threw hot coffee at her. I have seen criminals less petty than this. He also makes a lot of things about himself, and used his own tragedy, that he lost his parents, to justify not giving a shit about someone else's suffering and torture. Because if you are sad, you try to make everyone else as miserable as you.

His main weapon is the Rainbow Rod. Because his blind obedience to his male master and the way he views women weren't suggestive enough. He could use it as a melee weapon, but nope, punch, punch, kick, and the rod is just for beams until he can muster his inner strength, which comes from hate, but mostly from belief in himself. There is nothing wrong with believing in yourself, but it can't undermine friendship, which he looks down on. And believing in your friends is friendship, keep loopholes elsewhere.

Which allows Lightning to show his ultimate skill. The cheesily-named and always announced UNIFORCE! Which releases an extremely powerful beam of energy, capable of defeating powerful creatures, but leaves the user exhausted afterwards. Risky, because if it hits, you win, if you miss, you lose. Something that removes Stu points is that all his abilities have significant limitations and he ends up a bit like Deku in fighting style, as he struggles to control his great power and actually has to earn the way to control it. And his physical strength? Training. Already we found something that makes him more bearable!

Plus, he is not smart, and rushes head first into fights. For most Stus, no consequences. Lightning gets beat up a lot before he wins, some victories are by the skin of his teeth. He is a moron, but still, that makes him less of a Stu. Already he is more likable than Harrymort or Sterk for that.

One of his worst moments is when he waits orders to go save his girlfriend. He cares more about obeying Grand Ruler than to save his fucking girlfriend. While this is one of his worst actions, it also shows what's to blame for his attitude. Grand Ruler groomed him since a young age, acting as a father figure, for him to become the ideal soldier, warrior, hero of Starfleet and protect the lesser races. He genuinely believes he does the right thing, while he basically follows the orders of the tyrannical Grand Ruler.

In other words, he is a victim of manipulation.

He also is willing to protect those close to him when not hindered by stupid orders, and rushes into action thinking of the civilians. Also, when one of his allies acts actually heroic and tries to stop an assassin, Lightning tries to separate them, not help his ally, because of Grand Ruler's orders. He mourns his friend when she dies, and rightfully blames himself. However, the Ruler blames the victim instead.

Lightning also prefers to fight actual monsters and villains. And when he is not enough, Grand Ruler steals the spotlight from him, sometimes making him feel useless.

Is he a paragon of virtue, like he is supposed to be? NO. Is he irredeemable, like some other Sues? No. He has some redeeming traits, and his worst ones can be blamed on another character.

Overall, not the worst Stu I have seen; but still a Stu.
I stumbled upon this fic from Das_Sporking, in spite of knowing next to nothing about MLP. Well, Starfleet is wasted potential. It's about a squad which fights and defeats monsters of the week with the powers of the Elements and belief.

Each chapter is a fight against a random monster, and it's written as a Power Rangers series, very strict to the formula of the Monster of the Week. There are also flashy attacks, often called out, fusions of both heroes and villains, crossover with the source that inspired this...

I actually have no problem with the constant fights, I love good battle scenes and also write such.

So, what's wrong with this fic? The execution... is bad. And not because of inexperience, but because this series is breathing hate and malice everywhere. The heroes are actually cowardly and won't immediately go defend their friends if they risk their lives.

Also, nearly all fights and fighting styles are the same. Which is not good at all, because it diminishes the value of individuals, since they are replacable, and teamwork, since they don't complement each other's skills! I.e. you can make Starla, the archer girl, prefer to use distance and the bow. But of course the author makes even long-ranged magic users use punches and kicks too much, which don't even get a description. There are also no actual tactics except new powers out of the heroes' hineys to save them, or their God-King aka Grand Ruler interfering.

That's not the most creative approach. In fact, lack of variety makes things boring. And even Dragon Ball, which abused the transformation thing, does have some creative fights (currently Goku's Ultra Instinct got outsmarted by Moro and the fighters have to make a sadistic choice).

And, speaking of bad teamwork, it might actually be the point. See, the message of this series, in spite of being about a squad, is... deep breath... that friendship can't solve all problems, though in practice the protagonists say it sucks while it works.

Also, it has canon-bashing for the stupidest of reasons. Sure, killing off someone for wanting everyone to be friends or forcing someone else to kill her brother and then give her a miscarriage and sterility for being happily married is not petty and stupid and immoral at all. And woe if you are a woman who values beauty, a woman at all (yeah, it has sexism), or, worst of all, speak against Starfleet. In the last case, you are a loser and have to be brainwashed.

The bashing is infuriating, but there are moments when even the most hated characters of the author get a little respect. It's certainly not in the level of Partially Kissed Hero.

Starfleet are actually villains themselves. Their preaching about hating love and friendship and the misogyny would normally belong to mustache-twirlers, and imprisoning people for speaking against the crown and scanning them in case they are criminals, and the militarism, show a lot of fascist undertones.

The worst part is that actual people based on his critics are written in the story just to be tortured and killed off. That is Sonichu levels of deparvity.

The BEST part of the fic is the worldbuilding. Many characters fall short in practice, but have colossal potential, and the author consciously ignores development... except when he doesn't. This series has some good spots, but is wasted potential due to too much canon-bashing, repetition and too little use of strategy in the constant fights. Though the fights do have a bright point, that the protagonists actually struggle in the majority of them! Also, there are a certain few fights with strategies, the first story is actually the best one.

Rate: 3/10. It is repetitive, it is a hate fic, it has many moments of pettiness, and the sad thing? There is a solid skeleton for something good. I swear, if this was a live-action series as intended, because the author admits he tries that, some good special effects would make it entertaining. With these effects, if we remove all the malice seething in the series we can actually have something good! Ignoring it now would give it a 5 or 6, but I can't do that.
Starfleet sounds like a nice name, right? Right? I am speaking about the militaristic force from the hate fic "Starfleet Magic". Now, review for that fic will be one of the next posts, as well as Sue profiles to return to the journal's roots, but let's talk a little about Starfleet. Their basic troops are nonentities, and their core members are capable, but are mostly suited for the big monsters when they attack individually. And for bringing down friendship and their own allies.

Even though Starfleet specializes in fighting one strong monster at a time and defense, there are some of my villains too strong or competent for the team. Here are five examples. (Because Starfleet is a team, the baddies are allowed to use armies but only if they can summon them)

1. Ten of Swords. He ultimately lost to Stormwolf, but Stormwolf did not use Starfleet tactics. This swordsman, as his name suggests, has one mind but ten bodies, and they are all very good at swordfighting, able to cut bullets easily. Starfleet can focus on only one monster at a time and blindly charge at them, and always require Lightning Dawn, their leader, for the final blow. However, here they are even outnumbered, and due to not having strong bonds unlike the Ten's hivemind, plus all Ten being skilled in melee combat, the Ten will triumph.

2. Armilla. The Vampire Lady is better known for fanservice and her interactions with Finn and Leah, but she is actually pretty competent in a fight too. For starters, she managed to outsmart and kidnap Finn after a fight. She can spam teleport and is immune to the Sun, but that's not all. Due to being a woman, Starfleet would think she is obsessed with beauty, but she isn't. She can drag others to Limbo and do something that will even the numbers, which is summoning all three types of Stygians. And the Elite ones are a legit challenge to Padawan Finn. She can also just trap others to Limbo while she escapes with the teleport, raise legitimate points that will question the enemy team's dynamic and use the environment to her advantage.

3. The Hammer of Abyss. He and Armilla are close, and actually have some friendship, but I will not put them simultaneously because I don't have to! The Hammer is actually even stronger than his partner, his hammer can create earthquakes and he can destroy a big city. He has the power of shadows and dark crystals and knows how to use it, even giving Finn's then alive mentor the fight of his life. Like Armilla, he can send all Starfleet to Limbo and summon lesser demons to swarm them, though his summons are even more potent and he can and has used them to murder civilians. He is also good at gaslighting, which is useful against a team with no strong bonds.

4. The Loyalist. Unlike all the above, he does not summon minions or have many bodies to outnumber his foes. However, Finn only escaped him the first two times because of his friends, and Starfleet sees friendship as something wrong and stupid. Also they hate change, which is a problem, because the Loyalist does improve himself between encounters and Finn had to do the same to kill him by the skin of his teeth. The Loyalist would use the Limbo trick and wits and outsmart the Starfleet members one by one with his balanced fighting style.

5. Alastor. The Big Bad of Stormwolf Timeline and Archdemon of Wrath, he is far more of a threat than anyone would think. He is disguised as an ordinary human who spreads propaganda for his god-king, and is too strong for even Finn or Leah at full power to take on. He is big and, for his league, slow, but has a lot of attacks that have a devastating power and range, can teleport others away from him and summon monsters to aid him, knows a lot of secrets and can expose Starfleet's atrocities, ruining them for good, and he is actually tough even when his enemies are using effective teamwork, with strong bonds.
