In "Hell Hath No Fury" neither of the final challenges was a true villain. They were simply Rey Skywalker and Lightning Dawn. They might be arrogant jerks, but have a good heart. Finn spares Lightning because he sees Rey in him, but how accurate is he?
Similar: More brawn than brains
Rey is a very powerful Jedi. One of her attacks includes her throwing trees with little effort using the Force. Boulders will also do. She has also killed dangerous assassins sent by the Dark One and even the evil Emperor Palpatine. Lightning can hunt Rancors for sport, shrug off blaster bolts, run faster than a vampire and deal severe damage with every punch. However, while both can do strategies, if they can't overpower a foe they are in a very dire situation, and do mistakes like getting too aggressive or, in Lightning's case, announcing their abilities all the time.
Different: Fighting styles
Team Stormwolf has the Force user and the melee magical bruiser, Finn and Leah. The two have vastly different fighting styles. If Rey is like Finn if he focused on brawn and not brains, Lightning is Leah if she did the same. Rey might be human, but she uses the Force for telekinesis, mind control, thunderbolts... and in close range, she has a lightsaber. Lightning primarily uses fists and attacks with speeds hard for the human eye to catch up to. If the martial arts fail him, he will use the Rainbow Rod and announce his special attacks, which are beams with destructive results. He can also strengthen his punches.
Similar: They are manipulated by actual bad guys while being heroes themselves.
Rey has been a victim. She was manipulated by Kylo Ren constantly, resulting in her distancing herself from her friends and seeing him as the only person who understood her, while he wasn't. He saw her as a nobody he could use and lusted over. His dark influence is the reason she ran from people who actually cared for her. Lightning has also been a victim, from Grand Ruler. The Ruler taught him he is superior to everyone else, to isolate himself from others and to be a white savior and his personal sword.
Different: How they are manipulated
Rey had a strong mind. Which is why Kylo by himself could not manipulate her for long. So, the Dark One applied his own personal touch, connecting their souls. The manipulation happened through an imprint, one of the most powerful and dark spells with souls. Grand Ruler had an easier task. He took Lightning as a child and acted as a father figure. There was no brainwashing, just grooming.
Similar: Arrogance.
Their most fatal flaw. Both believe they are the best and only heroes in their groups, refuse to cooperate with friends and often act as their burden is to save others. Thankfully, their ego does not give them a god complex and they never are oppressing or killing anyone just because they feel they are superior, and both can partially back it up.
Different: Their views on redemption
Lightning is against redeeming villains. In fact, he and his men will call anyone who believes in redemption stupid, and the only time he tries to redeem others is by extracting evil from them forcibly, which is not true redemption. He also serves a system which brainwashes people into agreeing with it, which is what he could consider redemption. He himself prefers to kill monsters and see entire races as evil. By contrast, Rey will try to see the good in any monster, only killing the truly vile people... unless she imprinted on them. But she managed to redeem even the vile Kylo Ren, while also saving innocent hungry creatures. Even after the imprint, Rey does murder abusers but spares anyone who isn't 100% evil.
Similar: They believe in themselves more than in friendship
Belief in oneself is a powerful force. It's the main virtue of both Rey and Lightning, what keeps them strong in a fight. It comes with all its bad things, like arrogance, but also good things, like independence on friends and determination. Even when cornered, the two will not give up easily and will always try to fight for a second round.
Different: Their views on women
Rey is extremely feminist. She acts savage towards rapists, she believes women should be strong and idependent like her and will do anything to empower them. She also listens to their problems very well, and in my story her healing Virago shows how much she cares about innocent girls. Lightning is actually sexist. For him, women, especially married women, deserve no sympathy even if they have to kill family members and are forcibly rendered infertile. He also supports entitled "nice guys" and in my fic chews out Finn for moving on and not threatening Rey with suicide.
Similar: Overall morally light gray
Both Rey and Lightning are full of flaws they do not realize (at first), will trust abusers before their own friends, have a big head... and still are willing to do the right thing. They will help those in need, they will fight against criminals, they will never give up wanting to help others. They are far from pure good, but are not really evil either.
Different: Their connection to the protagonists of my series
Lightning is seemingly just another antagonist, who is strong and not pure evil. In fact, Finn tells him he simply reminds him of someone else and that was how he could read him. Rey is a whole different story. She is connected to the backstories of a lot of characters. Finn and Poe above all else, and in my verse also Virago and even Leah. This makes her a far more personal challenge to Stormwolf. It's also the reason Rey is the A-Plot and not Starfleet.
