Fall of Starfleet review
Nov. 17th, 2020 11:59 pmDo you know the Starfleet Magic hatefics? I thought so. It's not something the Jedi would tell you. These series are close to Power Rangers, and I would appreciate the abundance of fights if they didn't always have the same formula and there was some strategy. But, because besides the constant fights there is a lot of hate and malice in this fic, it gets deconstructed. Fall of Starfleet is a deconstruction.
This fic, Fall of Starfleet, is not for everyone. It has rape (thankfully never sexualized and leads to the rapist's minions betraying him), extreme violence, destruction, emotional abuse... it also has a lot of fights.
But why does this fic succeed? Because the fight scenes are all well-written, full of logical twists and strategy instead of deus ex machinas and because these battles actually carry emotion. It also raises a lot of points about the unfortunate implications of the original series, and above all else, it prioritizes not the bashing of Starfleet's favored characters, but giving justice to the characters who are treated like shit for no reason.
That last one is what separates a good spitefic from a hate fic. And, even better, the story actually makes the redeemable Stus and Sues sympathetic and gives them development, and when a Starfleet member dies, it's portrayed as tragic.
This fic also shows a lot of love to the series Starfleet is based on and shows respect to the values Starfleet shits on. The main villain is competent and entertaining, and he is basically the embodiment of hate and malice.
Overall, Fall of Starfleet is a good guide on how to make spitefics, contrasting with failures like Partially Kissed Hero and Starfleet itself.
9.5/10, very gripping and emotional, even though it isn't for everyone.
