Doom 2: Hard but fun!

I could never believe I would ever get to actually play this classic, which made even a big cult around it. And even the Normal Mode (Hurt Me Plenty) is actually tough towards the end. It's telling that the enemies in the ENTIRE Knee Deep in the Dead part of the first doom are almost all present and many in the second stage. Exception the motherfucking Barons. Who were strong bosses in Doom 1, but compared to certain other motherfuckers they are cannon fodder in Doom 2.

It's basically Doom 1, but more frantic and with far more variety of enemies. The Revenants who have homing shots and a mean hook, the Pain Elementals who spawn Lost Souls all the time, the annoying commandos and the MOTHERFUCKING ARCHVILES are examples.

Thankfully, you also get the legendary Super Shotgun which is far more effective for melee enemies and fodder killer.

There are many traps, secrets and puzzles that will reward the player, as well as three encounters I describe as "boss encounters".

1. Stage 10, the Cyberdemon who can teleport. Shoot it until it dies. Oh, and make sure you don't get a rocket to the face and watch his teleports to get an invulnerability pack.

2. Stage 20, Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind. Simultaneously. Don't fight both at once, make them fight each other. Then BFG the heck out of the survivor.

3. Stage 30, Icon of Sin. Get on top of the arena to activate the switch, avoid or use the BFG on the endless beasts the wall of woe spawns, don't allow his cubes to hit you because they always instakill, and fire three rockets (and it has to be rockets) to the wall's brain to kill it.

It's actually a very frantic and fun game, which can be frustrating though. And even though you WILL rage, and Nightmare can piss off even the elitists, in the end you will feel as if you destroyed Hell for real. It's THAT satisfying to see the Icon of Sin go down. I didn't like the boss in terms of gameplay, but I loved the idea of it being the programmer.

Overall, 9/10, I enjoyed this game thoroughly!

comments

Doom review

I played the original Doom yesterday, Knee Deep in the Dead.

It was a pleasant experience. The very first level is basically a tutorial, except it refuses to take your hand. It just allows you to figure out how to fight by yourself.

You start with a pathetic pistol and your fists. But if you love exploring and looking for the many, many secrets, and solve some puzzles, you will never regret it. You will get a chainsaw, a shotgun, a chaingun, even a fucking rocket launcher... But caution with the last one, using it too close will hurt you more than most enemies.

Phobos is indeed fearsome at some points. The enemies are almost always basic, but you might have to fight ten of them at once, and there is no such thing as Glory Kill. But there are the Spectres, who are durable and WILL get close to you, maybe even ambush you. Pro tip: use the chainsaw. Thank me later. Tip 2: Kill fodder with the shotgun, it is effective and there is an enemy that always drops ammo for it.

There is a single point I felt a little fear. It was dark and hard to see, and full of shotgunners and Spectres! It's the point where the chainsaw will save your life. You need to be fast and smart to survive the brawls.

The final stage, Phobos Anomaly, was a good guide how to make a boss stage.

There was one little problem. When I press crtl+alt+arrow key, the screen rotates due to my desktop. Guess how you shoot while strafing. This made the boss fight harder than it should be, but I still came out on top. I enjoyed the game, and I hope you do too!

comments
