Five characters of my fics Matt Engarde can beat (and five he can't)
Matt was one of the most dangerous enemies Stormwolf has faced, though not because of his physical strength. His shadow is still looming over Stormwolf.
Getting Starfleet training to protect himself, he became able to fight, but still had a long way to the top. Whom can he beat in a straight fight?
Can: Umi-Bozu
Surprise! The Umi-Bozu can actually end him with one hit, it has water tentacles and can fire ship-wrecking streams of water. Why is it beatable by the Nickel Samurai? Simple, because it's very flammable. Matt can throw a few wine chalices at it, then set it on fire and end it in a few hits. Especially since he can intensify them with a gust of wind from his fan. He can also stay away and pelt the beast with knives.
Can't: Armilla
Sure, Matt is cunning and strong for a human, but against Armilla, he would lose. She is too fast for him to set her on fire, as his one spell is to make wine glasses. She is also a bit weaker than current Leah, who killed him despite being near-mortally injured by silver knives. Armilla would suck him dry in seconds.
Can: Stone Heart
Both he and Stone seemingly are idiots who suck at their jobs because of ego and stupidity. Except Stone Heart actually is an idiot, while Matt is not, and is a very good actor. Stone Heart has the better magic, but unless he creates a bad dream involving Shelly de Killer, he will lose the battle of wits pretty fast.
Can't: Rhymey Ward
Rhymey might not be the greatest manipulator, but he is definitely stronger and more skilled than Engarde: he trained him in fighting and has actually strong spells he knows how to use. Most importantly, he is a great swordsman who actually beat a Resistance member and a master assassin. If master and apprentice fought, Rhymey would always win.
Can: Jonnie Goodboy Tyler
Jonnie fancies himself as a god, and like Matt is much more powerful than an average person, but still has no noteworthy powers apart from a very good arsenal. Despite that, they are both quite effective, Jonnie actually moreso as he blew planets up with his technology. So, what would give Matt the edge? Simple. While on paper they are nearly equals, Jonnie faced only very weak, self-disposing enemies, which is why he got as far as he did, while Matt has been threatened by powerful foes like Shelly and Titan before meeting Stormwolf. Which means that, in spite of their stats being close, Matt would win.
Can't: Virago
While Matt could capture Virago through Rhymey, it was a close fight. Virago is skilled enough to duel with him, smart enough to avoid his manipulation, and has a better arsenal. Matt has a spear, knives and a fan, but Virago has the mythical Orca Swords. Finally, in terms of abilities, Virago has the Force, Matt has swirling chalices. Pretty close, I suppose.
Can: Ron
Ron is one of the best former Stormtroopers who has no Force abilities. He knows how to use his blaster effectively and has beaten many Sith Troopers by himself. However, he has limits. While he can fight hand-to-hand and use a blaster, the Nickel Samurai has the chalices, can throw many knives at once, push Ron away with a gust of wind from his fan, and in close combat dominate with his spear.
Can't: Pierre
Pierre, the Hero of Unicorn's Blade, is a knight who is polite to many, but a fearsome foe to abusers. He has beaten an abusive wizard, Netanel, who barely escaped him. He also can take on Rhymey in a swordfight and win. Even if he couldn't beat Matt's master in fighting skills, none of Matt's attacks can directly pierce Pierre's armor. At best he would find a fire source to scorch him, and that would only work because of the glasses of wine, but Pierre is not a fool to just take it and can blind him with beams of light.
Can: Fake Finn
Finn's imposter is a decent fighter. He can be a good manipulator, who pretends to be someone he isn't and has fooled people, and has helped beat one of the Goriya Brothers. With that said, he is not as good as he thinks he is. Matt has faced the real Finn in a battle of wits and came close to winning through his blackmail. Also, Fake Finn has just a blaster and can be caught off-guard. He would have trouble figuring his foe out, and even if he did, he would meet a spear to the face for his trouble.
Can't: Finn
Despite being Matt's main enemy in the end of Arc 2-1, Finn never truly fought him, he shot him once for distraction. While in a battle of wits they were nearly equals, Matt also tried to break him with several death threats. While they are not fully hollow as he would find a way to cheat (by proxies or otherwise), in a fair fight he doesn't stand a chance. Finn can use his blaster exceptionally, finding his mark with his eyes closed even without homing his shots. If Matt gets close, the lightsaber can cut him down, and the Force will allow the Jedi to sense cheap shots and reflect glass shards and thrown knives. In short, Finn would wreck the bastard.
